My garden is growing in leaps and bounds. With over 4 inches of rain a week ago our basement suffered, but the garden is thriving. I thought I would give you a pictorial tour of the garden.
The beans should be ready to pick this coming week. |
We've had quite a few spinach and lettuce salads, though I do need to replant as the spinach is about done and the lettuce is getting close to the end. You can see the spinach and lettuce behind the cucumber plants.
As you can see the cucumbers are flowering. I am a bit excited and hope to get enough to make my first batch of pickles. If not I will be content with a few cucumber salads.
The tomatoes are starting to flower, but not doing as well as I would expect. They should be much farther along by now. Though the spring was so late everything is about 2-4 weeks behind schedule. I planted around 16 tomato of differing varieties: Roma, Sun-dried, Beefsteak, Amish Paste, Prudence Purple, and a couple of others.
As you can see the peas have grown considerably (tomatoes are in front and the peas are climbing the fence) and are so tall and heavy they are drooping over the fence. We picked the first batch of peas and I am beginning to wonder if they are worth the effort. The kids find them fun, but the amount of produce we are getting is abysmal.
First picking produced a little over one cup of peas. |
The peppers are still tiny and not doing much. I planted jalapeno and bell. |
The strawberries have given us about 2 gallons of berries. This is quite impressive for the size of the patch (10 feet by 2 feet). |
Carrots |
The peas drooping over the fence. |
Potato Towers. I have to watch these as they dry out quickly. |
From left to right behind the day lilies: Summer Squash, German/Russian Pumpkin, Zucchini and Buttercup Squash. Only the pumpkin and the buttercup squash are growing well and climbing the posts. |
