$50 Per Week Grocery Challenge - Week #13

How Much Did I Spend For Week #13?

I have a confession to make and it really is bugging me.  My husband went to Fleet Farm last week to purchase puppy food and glucosamine condroitin for our aging dog.  Yes, our 14+ year old dog is now on puppy food.  He is losing weight rapidly and needs the extra calories.  Anyway, I also had my wonderful husband pick up a large bag of yellow popcorn to use in my flour mill so I can make corn bread.  And guess what?  I forgot to add that purchase into my weekly grocery budget!  And to make matters worse I have no idea where the sales slip is or what the price of the popcorn was.  I have been diligent on entering into my blog every single grocery purchase not only for those few who are reading my blog but mostly for myself.  I really want to see if I can feed my family for a year on only $50 a week.  It really is eating at me and I may make a special trip to Fleet farm just to price out a large bag of yellow popcorn as I won't be heading out there for a few years to buy another bag - this popcorn will literally last us years if I only use it to make corn meal.  (We use only white popping corn for our weekly popcorn and movie night.)

This week I was on a mission to purchase cheep sunflower seeds.  A neighbor told me the local dollar store had a 16 oz. bag for only $1.00 and they were really tasty.  I hate going to that particular dollar store as it is in the heart of the city of Fargo.  The area is extremely busy and I try to stay clear of it, but Sams club is near there and so I do venture into that neck of the woods now and then.  Well, to make a long story short the dollar store did not have a 16 oz. bag, they only had 6 oz. bags for $1.00.  Even though I think that is a lousy deal I did buy one.  I will have to price out sunflower seeds at Fleet Farm (maybe then I will price out the popcorn) and other grocery stores.

My husband and kids headed out of town to spend time with his folks and so I needed very little milk.  Plus our garden is starting to provide us with a bit of food:  spinach and lettuce.  So I spent very little:  $27.25.  I would have spent under $20 but I used up a jug of canola oil and thought it would be a good time to replace it.  I keep my pantry pretty full and I have one gallon I just opened, plus one in reserve, but I always like to have 2 gallons on hand just in case prices suddenly sky rocket.  I am not a prepper, but I do worry a tiny bit about inflation and want to be prepared.

Update:  I purchased a 10 lb of red potatoes from Sams on Saturday for $5.98.  That brought my total for week #13 to $33.23.

Here is the breakdown for Week #13
